The Academic and Career Advisor will guide student success through personalized quality academic advising, career exploration, transfer planning and success strategies to retain a diverse student population.
The advisor oversees an assigned caseload of students in support of the Student Success and Retention Division's strategic plan of proactively engaging students in attaining their educational goals throughout their lifespan at Waubonsee.
This position reports to the Academic and Career Advising Manager.
ResponsibilitiesProvide holistic academic and career advising services to students, including course selection, choosing a major, degree pathways, university transfer planning, and all aspects of career planning.
Coach and support students in the career exploration process, utilizing college resources, interest inventories and online career tools.
Make referrals to counselors for students requiring more complex career assessments.
Monitor, contact and follow-up with students in assigned caseload.
Utilize college advising technology to identify and provide interventions for students who are most at risk for academic difficulty.
Provide transfer advising to students interested in attending four-year colleges and universities.
Use transfer articulation technology and university partnership agreements to help students optimize their course selection toward their four-year degrees.
Assist the student in making contact with key staff at transfer universities, and with university and scholarship applications.
Facilitate in coordination with Student Success & Retention, Educational Affairs and/or Admissions, activities related to new student orientation, group advising and classroom presentations.
Utilize variety of technology modalities to achieve learning outcomes goals.
Educate students and job seekers on current trends in preparing resumes and cover letters, how to conduct job search activities, and applying for jobs.
Interpret assessment results and explain placement, prior learning assessment and other equivalencies to students.
Sustain extensive, current knowledge of Waubonsee policies, academic and career programs, college catalogs, university transfer agreements, career exploration, job search and interview prep best practices, and overall holistic case management processes as assigned by manager and/or dean.
Play a leadership/coordinating role in assigned area of expertise (i.
e.
, new student onboarding, academic probation, veterans) and provide training and support for colleagues in that area.
Provide back up support for advising colleagues and front line staff and admissions advisors when needed.
Perform other duties as needed.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree required.
Two years of successful experience in position involving public contact in an educational setting or social service/customer service setting required.
Experience with case management is a plus.
Experience with military students is a plus.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven successful experience working with diverse populations.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) fluency is a plus.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Familiarity with college advising and degree audit software is a plus.
Flexibility and ability to handle multiple priorities.
Must be willing and available to work at more than one campus, work a maximum of two evenings per week (typically one evening per week) and up to four Saturdays per year.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
